SEO Friendly CMS Development
 |
Continuous CMS development is now an essential part of any business. Being able to update, manage and maintain often huge websites through an intuitive system is what clients demand. We used to have to do the hard sell on CMS driven websites. Having to cite the benefits versus upfront cost argument over and over. Now it sells itself.
The ability for an organization to manage its own content works for them, and for us. I design things and want to concentrate on custom CMS development, I don't really want to get involved in copy and pasting from Word into HTML all day. Nor does the client doesn't want to pay me £££'s an hour to do it either. Especially if they have someone on their staff who can take care of it.
Developing an SEO friendly system is of further benefit to the client, as they will have to spend less on SEO services, and expend less effort getting their website to the top of SERPs.
While it does take extra work to make the system SEO friendly, there are a few rules that once learned, make the whole process that much easier.
It should be able to generate its own sitemaps in XML upon request, or automatically. Google and the other search engines like sitemaps, they make crawling the site and the content that much easier.
The system should generate URLs that consider optimization as well as easy navigation. Having keywords in a URL is essential for effective SEO, but they also have to be navigable and understandable by human users. Striking the balance between the needs of the robot and human visitor is difficult, but one you need to get right.
The CMS should include templates that reflect the character of the client company. They should also be easily updatable and have several versions for the different browsers. The template should also have the facility to add tags to images for that extra little bit of SEO punch.
Structure is also vitally important in any CMS development. The layout and hierarchy should be logical and easy to follow. A confusing layout or structure will not only confuse human visitors, but robot ones too. A site must be able to be regularly and easily crawled in order to rate highly in SERPs.
While structure is essential, so is flexibility. A well developed CMS must also consider the needs of the people who maintain it, as well as those who visit it. It must be simple and straightforward to add content, change keywords and tags, whenever the user requires.
A custom-made CMS will include all these things, that's one of the benefits of using one. An out of the box solution may cover some of the requirements, but none of them cover them all. |
