London Web Design Inspiration
 |
We all get the design version of writers block sometime, it’s inevitable. What you do next is what makes the difference. Some people will call it a day, close up shop and go to the bar or a coffee shop and forget about work for a while. Others will go to the gym, for a run, ride, or whatever makes them happy. Living in London, web design can be the last thing on your mind in seconds because there is so much else going on.
When it happens to you, how you handle it is up to you. What you can’t do though is regard the time away from work as a waste. You don’t have to go drinking, or running to take your mind off designing for a while. How about combining time away, with a little subliminal thinking?
There are hundreds of places in the city that can serve as both a relaxing place to be and act as design inspiration. Here are a few of my favourites.
The National Gallery is the obvious choice, and somewhere I could lose days of my life. I find nothing better than wandering aimlessly in the hushed building marvelling at the artwork inside. While my conscious is taking in the works, my subconscious is storing it all up for a rainy day. I have had more than one eureka moment while strolling around this place.
Tate Modern is particular to London, where web design meets modern art. They may seem poles apart, but often the clean lines, use of bold colour around white space is exactly how a website is designed. Not all of the art in there appeals, but there is enough that does to make a visit there worthwhile.
The Victoria and Albert is another obvious choice. A whole museum built around design and decoration. They aren’t always relevant to a current project, but it doesn’t matter. Inspiration comes from anywhere, and doesn’t have to be even remotely related to the subject.
The Chelsea Harbour Design Centre is another destination in London where web design meets the world. You have to let your imagination take over as you stroll around the collections only millionaires could afford. A great place if you have a contemporary site to design.
These are just some places in London for web design inspiration. I visit one of them depending on my mood. It doesn’t always have to be related to the project at hand. There just has to be something that catches my eye and awakens my imagination. I invariably go back to work with a mind full of new ideas. |
